Lateral entry vs credit transfer: what is the actual difference?

Lateral entry is a defined AICTE route admitting diploma holders directly into the second year of a B.Tech. Credit transfer is the recognition of credits already earned in a degree programme. Lateral entry is often the mechanism through which a credit transfer is applied.
They are not the same thing
The two terms get used interchangeably, which causes real confusion when students compare offers.
Lateral entry
A defined route under AICTE norms. A student holding a three-year polytechnic diploma in a relevant branch is admitted directly into the third semester — the second year — of a B.Tech.
The diploma is recognised in place of the first year. It is a standard, well-established admission category with its own intake.
Credit transfer
The recognition of credits you have already earned inside a degree programme. You started a B.Tech somewhere, cleared some semesters, and those cleared credits are mapped onto another university’s scheme.
Your entry year depends on how many credits survive that mapping. It is not fixed in advance.
Where they overlap
Lateral entry is frequently the administrative mechanism through which a credit transfer is applied. The university admits you into a lateral-entry seat, and your transferred credits determine which year that seat sits in.
That is why the terms blur together in conversation.
